Two high school students sitting their university entrance exams in Tokyo were wounded along with a 70-year-old man in a knife attack by another pupil, on Saturday.
Public broadcaster NHK said three people were conscious after being injured in the morning when a student attacked them with a knife as students gathered to take their entrance exams.
The alleged assailant, a 17-year old high school student, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder, said NHK.
A boy and a girl as well as a man in his 70s were taken to hospital after the attack at around 8.30am, it is reported.
Half a million high school students across Japan are taking the annual university entrance exams this weekend in hundreds of venues across the country.
Despite the incident, the University of Tokyo conducted the first day of the exams as scheduled.
The National Centre for University Entrance Examinations confirmed that two of the victims were male and female high school students taking the exams.
Police said another victim was a man in his 70s and it was he who rushed to alert emergency services and report the attack.
Violent crimes are rare in Japan, but there have been a spate of knife attacks by assailants unknown to the victims.
In October, a man dressed in Batman’s Joker costume dressed in Batman’s Joker costume stabbed more than a dozen people on a train carriage in Tokyo, sending passengers screaming down the aisles of train carriages and scrambling out of windows to escape.
One witness told the Yomiuri newspaper: “I thought it was a Halloween stunt.”
He said he saw passengers running in a panic towards his train car adding: “Then, I saw a man walking this way, slowly waving a long knife. There was blood on the knife.”
Another video on Twitter showed a bespectacled man dressed in a purple suit, including a purple waistcoat, a patterned tie and a long coat.
As passengers fled he then sat down calmly and lit up a cigarette as he waited for police to arrive.
A few months earlier, a man wounded several people in a knife attack on a Tokyo commuter train.
