A man has been jailed after brutally attacking and raping a British woman backpacking through Victoria, Australia, and leaving her unconscious on a river bank.
Yarrun Morgan was high on a mixture of drugs and alcohol on the night of his horrific attack and hadn’t slept for two weeks when he targeted the young woman upon her return home from a night out with friends.
The woman, who had been living in Mildura on a working holiday visa, said she suffered from constant feelings of anxiety and fear following the attack, along with a loss of ““confidence, sense of self and trust”.
Morgan, 24, pleaded guilty earlier this year to rape and recklessly causing serious injury.
Mildura County Court heard of how Morgan had approached the woman on her way home, while she was “disoriented” upon leaving the Mildura Hotel.
CCTV captured the attacker as he followed the woman from the town, to the George Chaffey Bridge over the Murray River, the Daily Telegraph reported.
There, he grabbed her in a “bear hug”, put his hand in her underwear and digitally raped her.
Judge Michael Bourke said the woman was “screaming” but “unable to get away”.
Morgan then punched the woman, knocking her out and causing her to fall backwards down the bank of the Murray River.
Judge Bourke told Morgan the woman’s statement presented a “resilient determination to recover and manage the aftermath of what you did to her”.
The court was told of how Morgan had a “sorrowful” history and had been exposed to violence and substance abuse as well as “extreme, debilitating poverty and disadvantage” growing up.
Morgan’s defence counsel said the 24-year-old had a low IQ, with most of his language skills sitting around a grade 3 level.
Shortly before the attack, he had lapsed back into drug and alcohol abuse, after two years of rehabilitation.
Morgan has been sentenced to 8 years and six months of jail time and was required to serve a minimum of five years before parole.
A total of 898 days Morgan had spent in pre-sentence custody has been declared as time served.
