Cristiano Ronaldo tests positive for COVID-19 while on international duty with Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty for Portugal.

The Juventus superstar played 90 minutes during his country’s 0-0 draw with France on Sunday, sharing the pitch with a number of other high-profile players  although he is asymptomatic.

A Portugal statement read: “Cristiano Ronaldo was released from the squad of the National Team after a positive test for COVID-19, so he will not face Sweden.

“The Portuguese international is doing well, without symptoms, and in isolation.

“Following the positive case, the remaining players underwent new tests this Tuesday morning, all with a negative result, and are available to Fernando Santos for training this afternoon.”

Ronaldo is the third Portugal player to test positive for COVID-19 during the international break, after Anthony Lopes and Jose Fonte were also struck down with the virus.

As well as the Sweden fixture, Ronaldo will miss the next three Juventus matches, against Crotone, Dynamo Kiev and Verona, all of which occur within the next 14 days.
